HUBLOT AND JEFF KOONS PUSH WATCHMAKING INTO THE REALM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

The boundaries between contemporary art and haute horlogerie are being redefined as Hublot joins forces with renowned American artist Jeff Koons for a new collaboration that transforms timepieces into collectible works of art. Bringing Koons’ instantly recognizable sculptural language into the world of watchmaking, the collaboration introduces two distinctive creations: the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog and the MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons. The partnership combines Koons’ playful yet highly precise artistic vocabulary with Hublot’s technical expertise, turning the traditional wristwatch into a form of wearable contemporary art.

At the heart of the collaboration is the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog, a horological interpretation of Koons’ iconic Balloon Dog sculpture from his Celebration series. Measuring 42mm, the case, bezel, dial and sapphire crystal have all been re-engineered with rounded, three-dimensional “puffed” surfaces designed to replicate the inflated volume of a balloon sculpture. Achieving the distinctive geometry required five-axis CNC machining, while a rubber crown inspired by a balloon’s inflation valve, a flexible rubber tail extending from the case, three-dimensional Super-LumiNova indexes and a miniature Balloon Dog counterweight on the seconds hand add playful sculptural details throughout the design.

Powered by the automatic HUB1710 movement, the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog is offered in three executions: mirror-polished stainless steel, red anodized aluminum and blue anodized aluminum. Each version is strictly limited to 200 pieces, with a retail price of $25,100. The artistic experience extends beyond the watch itself, with every edition presented alongside a chromed Balloon Dog sculpture finished to match the color of the corresponding timepiece.

The collaboration takes an even more experimental turn with the MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons Sapphire Titanium. Inspired by the origins of time and the birth of the universe, the 44mm timepiece is housed within a transparent sapphire case that requires more than 534 hours of precision machining. Inside, concentric 18K white-gold rings are surrounded by 202 baguette-cut diamonds and blue sapphires, creating a gravitational, almost cosmic composition around the central movement.

The MP-14 Origin also marks a milestone for Hublot as the maison’s first automatic central tourbillon. Its 594-component HUB9014 movement features a peripheral rotor, while floating red and grey cubes indicate the hours and minutes at the center of the watch. The model’s name and concept also reference the 14th Street location of Koons’ first solo exhibition in New York in 1980. Limited to just 30 pieces worldwide, the MP-14 Origin carries a price tag of $488,000.

Even the presentation of the watches has been conceived as an extension of the artistic collaboration. The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog editions arrive with matching chromed sculptures, while the MP-14 Origin is housed within an immersive infinity-mirror installation featuring one-way mirrors and LED lighting. Together, the two creations position watchmaking not simply as a discipline of precision and craftsmanship, but as another canvas through which contemporary art can be experienced.
